Sometimes I just sit and stare at the computer screen. I have a blank word document open. There is usually a cup of tea to hand and a notebook. Other times I am writing so much that my shoulder aches for days afterwards. I have no mediocre switch. I write furiously or not at all. I’m not a sentence here or a paragraph there type of person. I am someone who thinks too much. This on occasion can block my creative thoughts but sometimes this blockage can encourage good ideas; it depends what sort of day I am having. It’s a bit of a vicious circle.
For months I have been dabbling in meditation and my thoughts were too strong to even think about untangling them. I found myself getting very frustrated so I just abandoned the idea. I had misunderstood the method; I didn’t have to clear my mind of thoughts at all. It is about letting those thoughts fly. My creativity had gone a little dry and I wanted to try meditation again to see if I could refresh my mind and body.
I closed my eyes and just let my thoughts run free, after a few minutes I realized that I was calm, relaxed and felt quite light in my physical self. In my mind I could see a window of which all my worries and stresses were on the other side and I was looking out at them. It was like being sat in a conservatory watching the storm; you know you are warm and safe whilst it’s all going on out there. It felt like I was separated from my bad thoughts and I had a peaceful moment to relax and do what I needed to do in the first place; be able to meditate successfully. The reason I wanted to write this post is because it has been so effective to me I am hoping to pass it onto you if you are having problems getting creative.
The Glass Technique
- Pick some music. You can choose what suits you. It is simply to block out any outside noise and lessen the chances of you getting distracted.
- Make sure you are sat up. You can sit on the floor or in a chair; sometimes I sit up in bed. Try not to lie down as you risk falling asleep.
- Close your eyes and take plenty of deep breathes. In through the nose and out through the mouth and do this a few times until you feel your body start to relax. Soon you will fall into a natural rhythm of breathing.
- This is the bit that may take some time but imagine you are looking out of a conservatory. On the other side of the pane of glass is everything that worries you so this may bring memories of people and places to your mind. Don’t be frightened because you are going to keep them on the other side of the glass. You are safe where you are, now relax and let yourself go. Keep this feeling going for as long as you feel you want to, don’t force it upon yourself. It may be a case of stopping and trying again tomorrow.
- You can be in that moment for as long as you like and when you are ready you can open your eyes.
- I recommend you do this daily to get the maximum benefit.
- The more I have used this technique the more my worries and concerns seem to feel further away. Mentally I had imprisoned them, watched them, observed them and understood them. I got to know my worries, talked to them and asked them to leave. In other words, I was dealing with them through this glass technique.
- As a side note, if you have worries that are of a concern to you then although meditation is a fabulous way to relax you may benefit from cognitive therapy as well – just a thought.
